Acknowledged field leader of newly emerging field: Sered, in New York, and Lenore Anderson in California (also under contract to TNP), are the movement leaders in the current effort to find more humane and effective ways to deal with violent crime. Sered has been profiled in The New Yorker https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/black-wounds-matter, appeared at the Aspen Ideas conference, and has been featured on the Marshall Project website https://www.themarshallproject.org/2017/02/16/is-prison-the-answer-to-violence among others.
Brilliant author, exciting new voice: in addition to being a Rhodes Scholar and a multiple-award-winning leader for social justice, Sered is a brilliant stylist (she has a masters degree in poetry), and the book is both paradigm-shifting and a pleasure to read. (Sered also had a chapter in Decarcerating America, our anthology edited by Ernest Drucker.)
Cutting edge topic: everyone in the field is extremely eager to hear about what is working and what is not. Sered has a speaking agent and keynotes and presents at all the relevant conferences.
Institutional Support: Vera Institute of Justice will help promote. The project is funded by the Ford Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Public Welfare Foundation, which will also help promote.
